Education plays a significant role in the region’s economy, not only employing thousands of people but also, of course, training and preparing the next generation to join the work force. During the past year, this sector of the economy created even more jobs because of major construction projects, particularly in Clarion and Oil City. |

CLARION — Clarion University welcomed a record enrollment of 7,111 students for the fall 2008 semester. That number represented an increase of more than 300 students over fall 2007’s then-record enrollment. It represented a 4.4 percent increase. |
Grove City Alumni Center Takes Shape

GROVE CITY — Grove City College’s lower campus at the corner of Broad and Main streets has been a flurry of activity over the past 12 months. Nearly a year ago, ground was broken for the $6.7 million Carnegie Alumni Center project that will include a 6,200-square-foot addition and renovation of the existing 12,600-square-foot building. |
Fanklin's Seventh Street is Saved

For much of 2008, it appeared as if Franklin’s Seventh Street Elementary School might close. But after months of discussion and strong opposition from those committed to the school, the Franklin Area School Board voted 6 to 3 in late November to keep the school open and make only renovations and no additions to Central Elementary School. |
Child Development posts significant changes in '08

Child Development Centers had what it described as a great year in 2008. Additions were built, accreditations were achieved, more programs were added and a new Web site was launched. The Franklin School-Age Center earned accreditation from the National After School Association, an organization that symbolizes excellence. |
New President takes helm at Westminster College

NEW WILMINGTON — Westminster College, a top-tier national liberal arts college, enjoyed a record-breaking 2008 and welcomed Dr. Richard Dorman as its 14th president. Dorman joined Westminster in July after spending the previous 12 years as vice president for institutional advancement at Otterbein College. Dorman had additional higher education experience at Penn State University and the University of Louisville. |
