Section_I New bridge going up at Foxburg A $10.1 million bridge is going up across the Allegheny River at Foxburg. It will carry Route 58, linking Clarion County community to Armstrong County. The two-lane structure is being built so close to the existing single-lane bridge that a pedestrian walkway will not be added until after the current bridge is demolished. The new span is expected to be completed in the fall. Bethlehem Steel Bridge Co. built the existing subdivided Warren Truss Bridge in 1921. It provided a railway on an upper deck and a crossing for other vehicular traffic on its lower deck. The bridge stopped being used as a railroad bridge in 1964, and the railroad approach spans and track were removed. The current bridge was preceded by at least two other structures. Photos taken of the town in 1878 show a two-span metal arch bridge with cut stone abutments and pier, according to information compiled by Daniel Alward of Franklin. The arch bridge disappeared sometime by 1908, as photos taken in that year indicate a three-span truss bridge with intersecting diagonal support members. The supporting stone piers and abutments appear to be the same ones currently in use. The Foxburg bridge is 520 feet long and 20 feet wide and appears to have used the cut stone sub structure from its predecessor. The new bridge is being constructed in a manner to lessen the impact on three threatened or endangered species located in that area – northern riffleshell and clubshell mussels and the longhead darter fish. |
