Knox Ambulance Co. and Family Service & Children's Aid Society of Venango County were recipients of grants worth $60,000 through the McElhattan Foundation.
The ambulance company was given $30,000 to purchase equipment and $5,000 to hire a grantwriter or marketing consultant to help the company obtain support from other sources.
Family Service was given $25,000 to be put toward the construction of its new $1.5 million shelter for victims of domestic or sexual violence and their children. The Franklin building will replace the current shelter on Oil City's North Side.
The new 10,000-square-foot, two-story building will double the space of the current shelter and will include kitchens, laundry facilities, family living areas, several bedrooms and more. All will be handicapped accessible.
Offices for professional support staff also will be included.
The McElhattan Foundation also provided $5,000 to Bridge Builders Community Foundation so delegates from Franklin may attend the National College Access Network Conference.
The foundation is based in Pittsburgh, but family members have ties to the Knox and Franklin areas.
