New Foxburg bridge to open today
"This is the third major Allegheny River crossing PennDOT District 10 has replaced in less than 10 years," said district executive Joseph P. Dubovi III. "We celebrate an important milestone with the opening of this bridge. Such investments in our highway and bridge system will continue to prepare our communities for future growth and success."
In addition to the Foxburg Bridge, new bridges over the Allegheny River opened in Ford City in July 2001 and in East Brady in April 2007.
Although the new bridge will be open to traffic, the Foxburg project will continue with the demolition of the original bridge scheduled for July 17 and the construction of a pedestrian walkway.
Ornamental lighting and railings will also be added to the bridge.
Beech Construction Inc. of Carnegie is prime contractor.
The new four-span, multi-girder bridge carries two lanes of traffic and replaces the original structure, a one-lane Warren Truss Bridge constructed in 1921 on pre-existing piers and abutments.
Construction began on the $10.1 million replacement project in February 2007. |
