DEP orders upheld in Emlenton water issue

A court also issues an injunction that prohibits the bottling plant from operating.

The state's Commonwealth Court has issued an order backing a recent action taken by the Department of Environmental Protection against Emlenton Water Bottling Co. and Emlenton Water Co.

The court this week granted DEP's request for an injunction that prohibits the bottling plant from operating until it is in compliance and DEP has approved its operations to resume.

The court also ordered that the terms and conditions in DEP's May 22 and June 11 orders remain in full force and effect. Those orders direct Emlenton Water Co. to maintain the boil water advisory and elevated chlorine levels in the water system, and continue with the water treatment plant filter reconstruction effort, setting Sept. 1 as the date that the filters must be repaired.

Emlenton Water Co. supplies water to 500 homes and businesses in Emlenton in addition to Emlenton Water Bottling Co.

DEP expands advisory for bottled water products

The DEP on Thursday also expanded an advisory for products bottled by Emlenton Water Bottling Co. due to the potential health threat.

"DEP inspectors have found that many bottles produced by the Emlenton Water Bottling Co. are not properly labeled with production dates or lot or batch numbers, violations of basic product tracking requirements," said DEP Regional Director Kelly Burch. "Because the company failed to label bottles properly and continued to bottle water after being directed not to, we cannot be certain the products lacking a production date or lot number are safe," Burch added..

"If consumers have bottles with the Emlenton Water Bottling Co. name on the label and there is no date or lot number, we recommend it not be consumed," Burch said.

The company bottles water with custom labels and markets its own line under the Emlenton Pure, Essential and Extreme H2O brand names.

The latest advisory expands a June 12 recall, when Emlenton Water Bottling Co. was to contact its customers immediately to initiate a bottled water recall for any products bottled since May 22 after an inspection found unsafe levels of an internal parasite in the water, which is supplied by Emlenton Water Co.

Since April 29, households and businesses in Emlenton have been boiling their water because intestinal parasites in the raw water drawn from the Allegheny River were not being removed due to deficiencies in the water system's filtering process.
