Clarion County Fair celebrates 70th year
Photo by Heather Leskanic - It couldn't have been the heat bothering this camel caught yawning outside the big top Monday at the Clarion County Fair. The Zerbini Family Circus offers daily performances throughout the weeklong festival at the Redbank Valley Municipal Park near New Bethlehem.
At the 70th annual fair in Redbank Valley Municipal Park, of course.
The celebration continues all this week with a schedule featuring circus acts, 4-H judging, refreshments, carnival rides and games, home and garden exhibits, demolition derbies and more.
The Zerbini Family Circus offers daily performances, bringing several generations of performers to the local event.
Bryan Reichard, 9, of Shippenville stopped for a big slice of cheese pizza Monday afternoon after his goat earned the grand champion title during that morning's judging.
His mother, Sara, said he's shown rabbits and pigs in past years.
The goat, Butterscotch, will be first to go out for bid during the 4-H livestock auction scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday.
Tractor driving, carcass show judging, rabbit judging, open horse show performances, and apple pie/Hershey judging were also part of the mix on Monday.
Today's schedule features open junior dairy judging at 9:30 a.m.; open sheep judging at 1 p.m.; Tropical Amusements midway at 3 p.m.; open beef judging at 4 p.m.; demolition derby with compact cars, pickups and full-size cars at 7:30 p.m.; and free stage - Clarion River Jazz Octet at 8:30 p.m.
Wednesday's lineup includes the junior swine show at 8 a.m.; junior sheep show at 1 p.m.; barnyard games at 1:30 p.m.; junior beef show at 4:30 p.m.; kids karaoke contest from 6 to 7 p.m.; Hannah Montana look-a-like contest at 6:30 p.m.; demolition derby with full-size cars, compact cars and trucks at 7:30 p.m., and free stage with classic rock band "Whatever" at 8:30 p.m.
This will be the final year with the current grandstand.
Justin Clouse of the Redbank Valley Park Commission said they are seeking bids for the new grandstand project.
He said they are hoping to begin construction next month.
The present grandstand will be taken down with the new structure being built just right of the site.
This is to provide a better view of the entire event field, said Clouse.
Seating will be increased from the current 750 to about 1,160.
The cost of the new grandstand is estimated at about $100,000.
Anyone interested in a bid package is asked to contact the park office at (814)365-5924.
Food booths offer lots of choices for fairgoers - from ice cream and funnel cakes to sandwiches and stromboli.
Admission is a pay-one-price $8 fee at the gate, including parking, admission to shows and events and all carnival rides.
A performance by the nationally-known, chart-topping country music band Lady Antebellum will be featured Thursday night.
Grandstand and bleacher seating for the performance is included in the fair's admission price, or individuals can purchase advance tickets for $6 at local businesses.
The trio recently released their latest music video for the song, "Lookin' for a Good Time." |
