Excavation finished at Grove schools
By JENNA GREGORY

Now the school board must decide what to do with the two vacant lots.

Valley Grove school board members have no immediate plans for the now vacant lots in the district's possession.

Excavation is complete at the sites of the former Cooperstown and Rocky Grove elementary schools.

The agenda proposed five options for board members to consider for the properties: public auction, sealed bids, private sale, convey to borough, or lease.

Valley Grove superintendent Jeffery Clark said at Monday's board meeting there is a process the panel must follow no matter what it may decide to do with the properties.

"There is no requirement (for the board) to do anything with them (the properties); there is no urgency from my standpoint," Clark said.

The Rev. Joseph Martin, board member, said the panel should consider a sixth option - that the district retains the properties for value and alternate activities.

Martin and board member Patrick J. Murray agreed that there may be some use of the property for the district, especially the Rocky Grove site, for athletics.

Murray suggested the athletics coaches and gym teachers be questioned about the possible needs or uses of the properties and the board should wait before making a decision.

Martin agreed, adding "Let's wait, let's see, and let's decide."

The board decided to demolish the buildings last September after the consolidation of three of the district's schools into one.

Sugarcreek Elementary now houses the former Cooperstown and Rocky Grove elementary students.

The sites of the former Cooperstown and Rocky Grove schools are vacant lots, for the time being.

LUNCH, BREAKFAST PRICES

The board also discussed the increased lunch and breakfast prices for both the elementary and high school.

Prices for all lunches and breakfasts are being raised 10 cents for the coming year.

Elementary lunches will be raised from $1.90 to $2, intermediate lunches from $2 to $2.10 and high school lunches from $2.05 to $2.10.

Student breakfast prices will jump from $1 to $1.10.

Adult lunches will be raised from $2.85 to $2.95, and breakfast from $1.75 to $1.85

The reduced price student lunch and breakfast of 40 cents and 30 cents respectively are mandated and will remain the same.

In other matters the board requested approval for:

* The H.E.L.P. program of Youth Alternatives for $1,400, the same cost as last year. The program helps scan and treats children with lice.

* A first reading of Pennsylvania School Board Association draft policies, the section on finances.

* Acceptance of funds from the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act for $134,454.61 and to sign the agreement with Riverview IU 6

* Appointment of PenServ as the third party administrator for the 430(b) tax sheltered annuity program.

And in personnel matters, the board requested approval for:

* Employment of Leslie Cliff as a food service worker at Rocky Grove High School.

* Assignment of Althea Wheeling as the federal programs coordinator/Title I reading teacher.

The next school board meeting will at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Valley Grove administration building.
