DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Two of the best players in soccer start World Cup competition Thursday as Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar both seek history in Qatar. Ronaldo is attempting to become the first male soccer player to score in five different World Cups when he leads Portugal against Ghana. Neymar is the leader of a Brazil team seeking a record-extending sixth World Cup title. South Korea plays Uruguay and Switzerland faces Cameroon in other games. South Korea forward Son Heung-min will likely be wearing a Batman-style mask to protect the left eye socket he fractured earlier this month.

Justin Fields will sit out the Chicago Bears’ game against the New York Jets and Nathan Peterman will start at quarterback after backup Trevor Siemian was injured in warmups. Siemian was set to start, but the Bears announced about an hour before kickoff he injured his oblique and would be replaced by Peterman. Siemian will serve as the backup but Peterman is now Chicago’s only healthy active quarterback. Fields is having a productive second NFL season but injured his left non-throwing shoulder last Sunday. The Jets' Zach Wilson is also inactive for the game after being benched this week in favor of Mike White.

Arizona State has hired Oregon offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham, making the 32-year-old the youngest head football coach in a Power Five conference. A Phoenix native, Dillingham returns to the school he graduated from 10 years ago in hopes of turning around a program that fired Herman Edwards in September after a 1-2 start. Arizona State also is facing an NCAA investigation for alleged violations of recruiting rules committed under Edwards. Dillingham began his coaching career at Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, Arizona, before being hired as an offensive analysis by then-Arizona State coach Todd Graham in 2014.

Marcus Rashford didn't think the jeers from England’s fans really were necessary. The 0-0 draw with the United States simply wasn’t good enough. Certainly not for a team with genuine ambitions of winning the World Cup for the first time since its one and only tournament success in 1966. And not for one coming off the high of beating Iran 6-2 in its opening game in Qatar. Rashford says “you don’t need fans to boo us to know we’ve not played as well as we could have.” England is still at the top of Group B and a point against Wales will guarantee qualification.

Canada has won its first Davis Cup tennis title, beating Australia behind victories from Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Auger-Aliassime secured the winning point when he downed Alex De Minaur 6-3, 6-4 after Shapovalov opened the day by rolling past Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-2, 6-4. Shapovalov had dropped both his singles matches this week and needed treatment on his back during a three-set loss Saturday in the semifinals to Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego that lasted 3 hours, 15 minutes. But the left-hander moved quickly around the court Sunday. Then Auger-Aliassime completed his perfect week in Spain.

Indiana women’s basketball coach Teri Moren says she considered not playing Memphis on Saturday night in the Las Vegas Invitational. No paramedics were on site to tend to an injured Auburn player in the preceding game. Auburn freshman Kharyssa Richardson fell hard to the floor with four minutes left against Colorado State and appeared to bang her head. There was a 50-minute wait for EMT personnel to arrive to The Mirage on the Las Vegas Strip. That delayed the Indiana-Memphis games by nearly 90 minutes.

Morocco pulled off another shock at the World Cup by beating Belgium 2-0 and leaving Kevin de Bruyne and the 2018 semifinalists in peril of a group-stage exit. Substitute Abdelhamid Sabiri got one past Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois with a free kick from a tight angle in the 73rd minute for Morocco’s first goal. Zakaria Aboukhlal then guided a shot into the roof of the net off a pass from Hakim Ziyech in stoppage time. Belgium had won its last seven group games at the World Cup. It was Morocco’s first win at a World Cup since 1998 and only its third ever.

Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou mysteriously disappeared before kickoff of his team’s shocking 2-0 World Cup win over Belgium. Bounou lined up with the Morocco team for the national anthems on Sunday then went to speak to coach Walid Regragui, who embraced him and turned to speak to his reserve keeper. Munir El Kajoui then ran onto the field in time to be included in the pre-match team photo and didn’t allow a goal as Morocco beat second-ranked Belgium. There was no immediate explanation of Bounou’s absence from the Morocco team or match officials at Al Thumama Stadium. Moroccan TV channel 2M said on its official Twitter account that he had felt dizzy right before kickoff and asked to be replaced.

Brazil defender Marquinhos says Neymar is working “24 hours a day” to try to recover from his ankle injury and play again at the World Cup. Neymar damaged ligaments in his right ankle in the team’s 2-0 opening win over Serbia on Thursday and will miss the match against Switzerland on Monday. He remained hopeful of recovering but team doctors still haven’t given a timetable on his return. Marquinhos says Neymar "is sleeping in physiotherapy.” Brazil coach Tite says he had to “force” Neymar to stop his treatment on Sunday and go be with his teammates at a training session.

The Iranian soccer federation and national team coach Carlos Queiroz have angrily hit back at former Germany great Jürgen Klinsmann for saying that Iran's World Cup players use dirty tactics because its in their “culture.” Both the federation and Queiroz called for Klinsmann to resign from FIFA’s technical study group. And the Iranian federation said it demands an apology from the former Germany and United States national team coach. Klinsmann said it's the Iranian players’ “culture” to play dirty and use tricks to turn the referee in their favor as he was commentating on Iran’s win over Wales for British broadcaster BBC.

Keysher Fuller scored in the 81st minute to lift Costa Rica to a 1-0 victory over Japan in the World Cup. The result leaves both teams with three points after two games in Group E. Fuller took advantage of a defensive error when Japan failed to clear the ball and hit the net from 18 meters just off the fingertips of leaping Japan goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda. The match was tactical and largely lackluster, particularly in a first half that did not yield a single shot on goal. The second half was slightly better with Japan pressing throughout until Costa Rica broke through.

The Cougars scored touchdowns on their first four possessions to take control in their regular season finale and assure themselves of a winning record for a fifth straight season. Hall threw two TD passes to Isaac Rex but BYU did much of its damage on the ground with 358 yards rushing. Tanner McKee threw for 313 yards and a TD but it wasn’t enough to prevent Stanford from posting back-to-back seasons with at least nine losses for the first time in school history.

A win against Uruguay on Monday would secure Portugal’s place in the knockout stages with a game to spare after its opening 3-2 win against Ghana.
