San Diego State squeezes life out of Furman, advances to third Sweet 16 in program history

Phil Kessel and Reilly Smith scored in the first period, and the Vegas Golden Knights held on to beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 for their fifth straight road win. Teddy Blueger and Pavel Dorofeyev also scored, and William Karlsson had two assists to help Vegas win for the ninth time in 11 games. Jonathan Quick had 31 saves — including 26 over the final two periods — as the Golden Knights moved two points ahead of Los Angeles for first place in the Pacific Division. J.T. Miller had two goals and an assist, and Phillip Di Giuseppe also scored for the Canucks, who had won two straight and seven of eight. Quinn Hughes had two assists and Thatcher Demko finished with 23 saves.

Team USA fielded a World Baseball Classic roster brimming with All-Star names from Trea Turner to Mookie Betts to Mike Trout. Despite its plethora of talented hitters, Team USA didn't bring the same pitching talent to the tournament, which culminated in the Americans being outpitched and outmatched in a 3-2 loss to Japan in Tuesday night's championship game.

Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George got hurt in the fourth quarter of the team's 101-100 loss to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder. George went down under the Thunder’s basket with 4:38 remaining. He lay on his back for several minutes before being helped to his feet. Supported by staff on either side, George headed to the locker room, appearing to barely be able to put any weight on his right leg. His potential loss could prove costly to a team harboring hopes of winning its first NBA championship. Gilgeous-Alexander scored 31 points against his former team.

Jayson Tatum scored 36 points and the Boston Celtics ended a long road trip on a high note by beating the Sacramento Kings 132-109. Boston bounced back from blowing a 19-point lead in Utah on Saturday night by knocking off one of the top teams in the Western Conference. It won four of six on the road trip. Jaylen Brown added 27 points and Derrick White scored 20 for the Celtics. Domantas Sabonis had 16 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists for the Kings. Sacramento lost consecutive games for the first time since Feb. 3-5.

Tyler Toffoli had three assists, Calgary scored twice on the power play and the Flames bounced back from a six-goal loss one night earlier with a 5-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. Toffoli has nine points in the past four games, including six assists. Nick Ritchie, Troy Stecher, Rasmus Andersson, Elias Lindholm and Andrew Mangiapane scored Calgary’s goals. Mikael Backlund had a pair of assists and Dan Vladar stopped 19 shots for the Flames, who rebounded from an 8-2 defeat Monday night in Los Angeles. Frank Vatrano scored Anaheim’s lone goal. John Gibson made 38 saves and faced more than 40 shots for the 20th time this season.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Boone Jenner tied it with 46.9 seconds left in the third period, Jack Roslovic got his second goal of the game 2:43 into overtime and the NHL-worst Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Washington Capitals 7-6 on Tuesday night to end a three-game losing streak.

Adam Larsson scored on a breakaway backhander 1:52 into overtime and emergency callup goaltender Joey Daccord made 25 saves in his first NHL appearance since Nov. 1 as the Seattle Kraken beat the Dallas Stars 5-4 on Tuesday night. Brandon Tanev had two goals and an assist, Daniel Sprong and Jared McCann had a goal and an assist for the Kraken. Jamie Benn sent the game into overtime with the tying goal with 0.7 seconds left and had two assists. Miro Heiskanen and Joe Pavelski each had a goal and an assist and Wyatt Johnston also scored for the Stars.

Kirby Dach and Jonathan Drouin scored in the first period and the Montreal Canadiens beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2. Mike Matheson also scored for the Canadiens, who had lost six of their previous seven — including a 5-3 defeat at Tampa Bay on Saturday. Sam Montembault stopped 31 shots to improve to 14-14-3 on the season. Brayden Point and Pat Maroon had goals for Tampa Bay. Andrei Vasilevskiy finished with 17 saves. The Lightning have lost two straight since winning four of five.

Matt Boldy scored with 1.3 seconds left in overtime and Filip Gustavsson made a career-high 47 saves to give the Minnesota Wild a 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils. The game was a chippy, defensive struggle. After two scoreless periods, the Devils were outshooting the Wild 22-19. Minnesota finally broke through 6:41 into the third when Mason Shaw scored his seventh goal of the season on a wraparound. Timo Meier answered for the Devils five minutes later with his 35th goal of the season on a wraparound of his own.

Brandon Ingram scored 32 points, and the New Orleans Pelicans beat the San Antonio Spurs 119-84. Jonas Valanciunas had 19 points and 15 rebounds for the Pelicans, who led by as many as 36 points before closing out their second straight victory. Trey Murphy III scored 17, and CJ McCollum added 15 points. Ingram scored 16 in the third quarter, when New Orleans widened a 25-point halftime lead to 31. Sandro Mamukelashvili scored 20 for the Spurs.
