Japanese fans and players get attention at every World Cup because they clean up after themselves after the matches. This happens if they win or lose. The behavior is driving social media posts at this World Cup in Qatar, But it’s nothing unusual for the Japanese. They have been doing it since Japan's first appearance in the World Cup in 1998 in France. They are simply doing what most Japanese do — at home, at school, at work, or on streets from Tokyo to Osaka, Shizuoka to Sapporo. Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu says “for Japanese people, this is just the normal thing to do.”

Attorney Patrick Thomas said his client “deserves justice and patiently waited for her day in court” in her lawsuit against Gareon Conley. He said “a number of issues" that arose during trial would be addressed on appeal. The accusation against Conley shortly before the 2017 NFL draft was made by a 23-year-old woman who alleged that he had sexually assaulted her in a Cleveland hotel room. Conley’s attorney said the sex was consensual.

Far from Doha’s luxury hotels and sprawling new World Cup stadiums, scores of South Asian workers poured into a cricket ground in the city’s sandy outskirts to enjoy the tournament they helped create. Their treatment has been the controversial backstory of the 2022 World Cup, ever since Qatar won the bid to host the soccer championship. Headlines have been filled with reports of their low wages, inhospitable conditions and long hours, often in the scorching heat. But on Friday night as the Netherlands played Ecuador, the bleachers of the cricket stadium heaved with workers reveling on their one day off of the week.

Canada coach John Herdman attempted to inspire his players after a 1-0 loss to Belgium in his nation's first World Cup match in 36 years. His televised comments may have served to provoke Croatia, the losing finalist in 2018. Croatia’s 24 Sata (24 Hours) tabloid ran a fullpage photo of a naked Herdman with Maple Leaf flags over his mouth and private parts and a headline that translated to: “You have the mouth, but do you have the (guts) as well?” Canada and Croatia, which opened with a 0-0 draw against Morocco, play Sunday.

With Neymar out for at least another match, Brazil coach Tite must now start thinking about a replacement - and this time he has plenty of options. Tite brought nine forwards to the World Cup, and could also add a midfielder as Neymar’s replacement if wanted. Neymar hurt his right ankle in Brazil’s opening 2-0 win against Serbia on Thursday. The most straight forward option would be to use Rodrygo in Neymar’s position. Another alternative would be to put an extra midfielder in Neymar’s position to free up the other forwards.

World Cup host Qatar sits in a region that is warming faster than anywhere else on earth besides the Arctic. The wealthy Gulf Arab nation has been able to pay for extreme adaptive measures so far like outdoor air-conditioning to mitigate the effects of rising temperatures in some areas. Qatar has inched forward in recent years with climate pledges. But the transition away from hydrocarbons will not be simple for one of the world's largest producers and exporters of natural gas.
