The New York Yankees and Houston Astros will meet Thursday in a one-game series between AL division leaders at Minute Maid Park. It’s a makeup of a matchup postponed by the lockout. Both teams were on New York-to-Houston flights after wins Wednesday afternoon in the Big Apple. Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton homered at Yankee Stadium in a 5-3 victory over Oakland; Justin Verlander and the Astros beat the NL East-leading Mets 2-0 at Citi Field. Luis Garcia, who beat the Yankees in his last outing, starts for Houston against Luis Severino. The clubs split a four-game series in the Bronx last weekend.

Georgio Chiellini is hoping that Los Angeles FC’s young roster can help him at least partially rediscover the fountain of youth. In return, the veteran Italian defender looks to help the club capture its first Major League Soccer championship. LAFC went into Wednesday night’s match against FC Dallas with the league’s best record at 10-3-3. LAFC won the Supporters Shield as the league’s top team in the regular-season in 2019, but has not had postseason success. It missed the playoffs for the first time last year. Chiellini had been at Juventus since 2005, capturing nine Serie A and five Coppa Italia titles. He also played his final match June 1 for Italy’s national team.

Vincent Sevigny and Cam MacDonald scored early and the host Saint John Sea Dogs won the Memorial Cup, beating the Ontario Hockey League champion Hamilton Bulldogs 6-3 on Wednesday night. Saint John won its second Memorial Cup title in four appearances, rebounding from a first-round loss to Rimouski in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playofffs. The Sea Dogs also won in 2011 in Mississauga, Ontario. The event features the winners of the three major junior leagues and the host team. Riley Bezeau, William Dufour, Josh Lawrence and Peter Reynolds also scored for Saint John, directed by interim coach Gardiner MacDougall of the University of New Brunswick. Nikolas Hurtubise made 25 saves. Mason McTavish scored twice for Hamilton.

Mets aces Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer took their next steps toward returning to New York’s rotation. DeGrom threw 27 pitches to hitters in Port St. Lucie, Florida, on Wednesday and could progress to a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment. The 34-year-old right-hander missed the second half of last season because of right forearm tightness. He returned and made spring training starts on March 22 and 27, then was sidelined by a stress reaction in his right scapula that caused inflammation. Scherzer has been sidelined since straining his left oblique muscle on May 18.

SEATTLE — It started with base hits, bunts — intentional and unintentional from the Mariners — and blunders from the Baltimore Orioles. It escalated to better approaches with runners in scoring position, including productive outs in the form of sacrifice “flies” that were really line outs.

Julio Rodríguez hit his 12th home run of the season as part of Seattle’s six-run fourth inning, and the Mariners beat the Baltimore Orioles 9-3 for their seventh win in nine games. The Mariners took two of three from Baltimore and continued a stretch of good baseball after a 5-1 road trip last week. Rodríguez’s long ball was the highlight on a day there was finally plenty of offense for Seattle starter Chris Flexen. Rodríguez’s two-run shot was estimated at 431 feet and landed in the first row of the second deck at T-Mobile Park in left-center field. Trey Mancini had a two-run double and Ryan Mountcastle an RBI double for Baltimore.

The NFL and Deshaun Watson’s legal team presented their arguments before a disciplinary officer for a second day with both sides holding firm as the hearing is scheduled to continue in Delaware on Thursday. The league is insisting on an indefinite suspension and Watson’s side is arguing there’s no basis for a punishment that significant, two people in attendance told The Associated Press.  Former U.S. District Judge Sue Robinson, who was jointly appointed by the league and the NFL Players’ Association, is tasked with determining whether Watson violated the NFL’s personal conduct policy and whether to impose discipline.

Mike Clevinger outpitched Madison Bumgarner by throwing one-hit ball for six innings in his longest outing of the year, leading the San Diego Padres over the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-0. Jake Cronenworth broke out of a 0-for-26 skid with two doubles and a single, driving in two runs and scoring once. Clevinger struck out six and walked one. Nick Martinez threw three in relief to complete the shutout.  He gave up two hits and got his second save. Bumgarner allowed one run and four hits in five innings.

LIV Golf’s first U.S. event was set to begin Thursday, with a group of survivors and families who lost loved ones in the Sept. 11 terror attacks planning to gather at a nearby park to speak out against the Saudi Arabia-funded tour. The families are speaking out because of what they say are the Saudi connections to the tragic event in 2001. Fifteen of the 19 hijackers on Sept. 11 were Saudi citizens.
