'History of the paper has been the history of the oil country'

Oil derricks dot what is now the North Side business district in this photo of Oil City taken from Hogback Hill in 1872. President Ulysses S. Grant visited Oil City in September 1871 to check out the significant impact the oil industry was having on the region.

Since the early days of the oil industry when derricks dotted the landscape of the region, boom towns sprang up overnight and fortunes in oil were rapidly made and just as quickly lost.

The Derrick was dedicated to chronicling the rising oil industry that was changing the world.
