Dear Doctor: I bought a 2020 Subaru Ascent. When I got to 1,000 miles I checked the oil level and found that it was about a quart overfilled. When I confronted the service manager at the dealer, he didn't know why, but said he would check on it. I got a call and he stated that all of the Ascents on the lot checked the same as over full and the Subaru representative thought it was for "break in." Am I hurting the vehicle by running this way or is this normal? - Rich
Dear Rich: The fluid should be at the full mark and not a quart over full. Excess oil in the oil pan will just splash around as the crankshaft is turning. A very small amount above the full mark would be OK. (A level mark on any fluid is just an indicator and can also be off slightly either way.) I would ask the dealer to drain out the oil and measure the actual amount that comes out and fill it with the correct amount.
