A former Cornplanter Township man accused of sexually assaulting two girls over a four-to-five-year period waived preliminary hearings in two cases Wednesday in Venango County Central Court.

Bartholomew Crusan, 42, who now lives in Silver Creek, New York, is charged with 54 felony counts of indecent assault of a person less than 13 years old (27 counts in each case) and one felony count in both cases of corruption of minors.

He also faces felony charges of rape of a child, statutory sexual assault-11 years older, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child and aggravated indecent assault of a person less than 13 years old in one of the cases.

A criminal complaint filed by Franklin state police said two separate reports of child abuse were filed last Sept. 14 by Venango County Children and Youth Services.

The reports accused Crusan of having indecent contact with his stepdaughter, now 14, and stepniece, now 13, from the time he married the stepdaughter's mother in 2012 to their separation in 2014, the complaint said.

The stepdaughter described the abuse as beginning shortly after her mother and Crusan were married, which would have made her about five to six years old, according to the complaint.

The stepdaughter said Crusan sexually assaulted her at least 20 times in three separate locations around Venango County.

Each time the assault would occur after "everyone else was asleep and Bart would sneak into her bedroom," the complaint said.

"Bart would put his hand over her mouth and she would feel scared," the complaint said.

The complaint said Crusan would hold his stepdaughter down if she told him no, and described incidents in which the girl was able to run from Crusan and lock herself in the bathroom until a friend could arrive.

Two years ago, Crusan's stepniece revealed to his stepdaughter that Crusan had assaulted her as well, the complaint said.

The complaint said that during one incident when Crusan lived at a residence on Cornplanter Hill Road, he forced his stepniece to sit on his bed with him and watch pornography. Crusan also assaulted the girl on this occasion, the complaint said.

Crusan was denied bail and is being lodged in the Venango County jail.
