1971 Pirates Flashback

PITTSBURGH (UPI) - A rare clubhouse meeting and something almost as unusual, a near shutout of the Pirates by a rookie pitcher, has pumped fresh blood into the New York Mets in the National League pennant race.

After manager Gil Hodges lectured his Mets for nearly a half hour before the game, young Charlie Williams and Danny Frisella combined for a six-hitter as New York defeated the Pirates, 3-2 to cut Pittsburgh's Eastern Division lead to 3 1/2 games.
